Irish forestry is highly susceptible to many different types of damage. This not only depends on the location of the forestry in the country, it also depends on the type of soil that the trees are planted in, where the trees had been imported from, and the type of tree in general that has been planted. Many of this type of damage can also be found in other trees in the European Union especially in the United Kingdom. The UK suffers from many similar adverse effects from diseases, tests, and the climate as does the forestry in Ireland because of their proximity and the fact that they are also an island.
The first factor that is involved in damage to trees in southern Ireland forestry is pests and diseases. Pests and diseases are a blight on any tree and can do untold long-term damage. Once a single tree is affected inside a forest, the pests and diseases can quickly spread to the entire tree population. In this happens there is often devastating results. So, in the 1970s, the European Economic Community (EEC) instigated several measures to try to eradicate or at least limit the amount of pests and diseases that were entering the country. Many of these measures have found much success because the incidence of pests and diseases in the countries of the European Union has been reduced.
Irish forestry, especially western Irish forestry, also suffers from the adverse effects that are caused by the climate. Forests that are planted in the west of Ireland are much more likely to be damaged by high winds. High winds can affect trees in several different ways. The crown of a tree is susceptible to high winds because branches and limbs can become broken and torn leading to open wounds which in turn can lead to disease. High winds can also snap a tree into two pieces which will obviously kill the tree. And, in certain cases, especially where the trees are planted in wet or boggy ground, the high winds can actually push the tree over, this is known as the wind blow.
