Before I get into the benefits of working from home, lets cover what medical coding and billing is. The key thing medical billing and coding professionals do is maintain patient records using a standard coding system, ICD-9 index, to ensure compliance with federal and state regulation and insurance requirements.

I know it seems pretty straight-forward, but this job really isn’t right for most people. If you’re not a detailed oriented person or a problem solver, then job will drive you crazy. But, if you’re curious and not afraid of working hard to learn the basics when you’re just getting started, this will be a lucrative career in a growing field.

Once you learn the basics (you can go a school or learn through an apprenticeship) and prove you can code efficiently, you now have some leverage to make your case for working from home. The same skills that are necessary for you to do your work in the office apply even more when you’re working home. When you present this offer to your manager, be sure to frame it in a way that benefits the company. You can explain that by working from home you are more efficient by being able to focus without the interruptions that are present in the office and it will reduce the company’s overall costs (office related expenses). Ask for a three week trial period so that your manager feels comfortable knowing that if it doesn’t workout, she has the option to bring you back into the office.

Depending on your company, your workload may change. Some companies feel that since you are working for home and no longer have to commute, you should be able to process more bills efficiently. Other companies keep your current workload, so it really depends on your manager and what your company wants to do.

Before you approach your boss to have work from home privileges, make sure you are currently doing the job at a very high level. I can pretty much guarantee to you that if you are not efficient and quick when coding your bills, your request to medical code and bill from home will be denied.
