As a woodworker who loves to work on challenging projects, I take great pride in stepping back from a finished piece and looking at it, knowing the careful work that went into its creation. Some of the most challenging pieces in the woodworker’s repertoire happen to be chests, namely chests of drawers. It’s been said that if you can build a chest, you can build a house, and I believe that logic is pretty accurate.
You see, the same things that go into building a house apply to a much smaller chest of drawers. You have to know what needs the finished piece will fulfill, and have a vision of how to go about meeting those needs with your creation. You have to know what materials will best do the job and how much of it you need. This means knowing the measurements of each individual component the will be assembled into the finished chest. You set about milling the wood to the required dimensions, and then cutting out the joints. Mortise and tenon joints in members and dovetails in chest drawers are the way to go if you’re serious about building something that will put up with daily use and last a long time- perhaps a lifetime or even several lifetimes. Because woodworkers know what a sacred material wood is and we want to build in a way that makes the most of it. Once the pieces are just right, assembly can take place. And finally, a protective finish will be applied before a piece can be considered “done”.
I love making chests of drawers of the work that goes into them, and because you end up with something that is so functional. A good chest becomes an integral part of a room, it’s there to greet you when you wake up and before you go to bed each day. And if it’s been well made, you can count on it to be there until you don’t wake up anymore.
