Contact lenses are one of the most popular choices today for correcting vision problems such as astigmatism and nearsightedness. A contact lens guide can help you to purchase some good ones.
In America, you need a prescription for contact lenses, so if you need some your first move should be to make an appointment with an eye doctor, who will test your eyes to determine which kind of lens is best for you.
Contact lenses are either hard, soft, or oxygen permeable. The hard ones are made from Plexiglas and these days are obsolete. The soft ones are made from plastics that contain water, and are slightly larger than your iris. These are the most commonly used lenses. Soft lenses were made out of “hydrogel” plastics until a few years ago, when “silicone hydrogel” plastics began to be used. These are preferable because they let more oxygen pass through to the eye. The oxygen permeable lenses are especially effective in correcting astigmatism. They are smaller than the iris and made of rigid plastics not containing water.
About thirty years ago, “extended wear” lenses became available, that allowed you to wear contact lenses overnight and even up to one month without removing them.
Contact lenses are also classified by how often you should replace them, ranging from “daily disposables” that should be discarded after just one day to “planned replacement” lenses that can be discarded monthly or less frequently.
There are also colored lenses that can enhance your eye’s natural hue, special-effect lenses which alter your eye color more dramatically, UV-inhibiting lenses which reduce UV light but which should not substitute for sunglasses, and hybrid lenses which are hard in the center and soft on the edges.
Visit the Free Contact Lenses Guide right before seeing your eye doctor, and you will know the right questions to ask.
