Cyclosporine is available in the form of eye drops, also known as Restasis, a prescription-only method of treating dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). It does not offer immediate relief and works over a period of several weeks to six months, making it a good product of choice for more long-term relief.
However, you should only purchase cyclosporine if more immediate relief eye drops have failed. If you are using a combination of both, it is highly suggested you wait fifteen minutes between each usage of the products.
According to published reports, Restasis works by reducing inflammation in the eye, and its good name comes from being more successful in reducing inflammation, dryness and irritation over a longer period of time than other, more immediate methods.
Therefore, if you are using immediate relief products and irritation still occurs, a switch to cyclosporine might be a good idea for you. It is also a good idea if you are using products that include steroids – these can be potentially damaging and cyclosporine has less severe effects.
Cyclosporine eye drops can be administered the same way you administer your normal method, but should be used with more caution. They come in small, single dosage vials and, unless your doctor prescribes otherwise, are taken twice a day, once every 12 hours. It is recommended that when you administer them, you do not touch, blink or rub your eyes for at least 1-2 minutes. Instead, gently close your eyes for the allotted amount of time.
The side effects are less severe than brands of eye products that include steroids. They range from the typical redness, stinging, itching, pain and burning that are included with any type of eye care product. If you plan to switch to cyclosporine please ask your doctor about the side effects and follow his instructions.
