There are several surgical options available if your condition is serious enough to warrant surgery. Most people can easily manage their condition with simple lifestyle changes such as an improved diet and over the counter creams but for a small number of people surgery may be the only solution. Usually surgery will only be required if you have a lot of small hemorrhoids, a very large hemroid or a condition that is causing a lot of pain.
The hemorrhoidectomy used to be the only option available when it came to hemorrhoid surgery; this is a traditional surgery that involves cutting off the hemorrhoid with a scalpel. Because it is a cutting surgery, it results in more pain during recovery and slower healing. As with a lot of surgeries there is also the potential for adverse long term side effects, the hemorrhoidectomy is associated with long term incontinence problems. Not everyone may suffer from these side effects, but it’s important to note that all surgeries involve a certain amount of risk.
Although hemorrhoidectomies are still performed to this day, some of newer methods are preferred because they have less pain and very fast recovery times. Also, they don’t involve cutting so they have less risk of infection and less long term potential adverse side effects. Most of these newer treatments involve cutting off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid which causes it to dry up and naturally slough off. Cutting off the blood supply is done with staples, or rubber bands, these surgical options are called stapled hemorrhoidectomy and rubber band ligation.
One very exciting new treatment is the Doppler Guided Arterial Ligation which uses a Doppler radar to locate the hemmorhoidal veins allowing the doctor to quickly stitch them up cutting off the blood supply. Because this treatment is done inside the anal canal above what is called the dentate line there are no nerves here allowing for very little pain and a very fast recovery. This procedure can also be performed on an outpatient basis very quickly. Although this procedure is fairly new having been discovered in the early 1990’s, it is quickly becoming the treatment of choice among patients and doctors because of its many benefits and high success rate.
Since the advent of these newer hemroid treatment solutions, hemorrhoid surgery isn’t something that needs to be feared anymore, hemorrhoid surgery has made amazing advances over the years and seems to only be getting better at this point.
