We all know about the importance of keeping cholesterol levels low and watching our diet because not doing these things puts us at risk for clogged arteries, heart disease, and stroke, but how exactly does this happen? Why does cholesterol buildup in arteries form and why do exercise and other lifestyle changes make a difference? The answers to thee questions are not all that complicated but they are sometimes lost on most people because the why’s are often neglected in mainstream media.
Arterial plaque build up is really a combination of a few things: cholesterol, scar tissue, and calcium deposits. In most patients the individual eats too many foods which aren’t good for them. These foods often contain lots of calories with little nutritional value, high levels of fats and cholesterol, and these individuals do not get enough physical activity on their daily lives. Each of these situations leads to the clogging of arteries for different reasons.
Empty calories cause weight gain in people who do not exercise enough. It’s plain and simple. If you take in more calories that you use the excess begins to build up in your body. Similarly these foods also tend to be high in fats and cholesterol which enter your arteries and have the potential to block them.
Individuals with these problems also tend to get high blood pressure which causes damage to the inner lining of the arterial wall. This makes it easy for excess fat, calcium, and cholesterol to lodge along the arterial wall. The damaged areas of the wall are more prone to plaque buildup and when the damaged area begins to heal it will often close over the deposits and form scar tissue. As his happens more arteries begin to harden and the walls get thicker and can eventually become blocked.
The best way to avoid all of this is to keep your cholesterol levels in check by eating better foods, increasing your levels of HDL cholesterol which help to lower overall cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure to minimize arterial damage, and lose weight. Luckily exercise has the potential to positively influence all of these factors as does eating a more nutritious diet with fewer calories. If you can stick to these solutions clogged arteries should be much less likely to affect your future.
