Many times couples look towards acupuncture because other methods such as the cost of ivf seem so far out of reach.

Acupuncture has been shown to be successful in women especially when used in combination with other treatments such as herbal medicines.  In fact, there have been reports of conception occurring from using only a combination of acupuncture and herbal medicines and without traditional medical interventions such as in-vitro fertilizations. However, since these events are isolated and happened outside of a test environment, no one can say that if the conception was due to acupuncture and herbs or whether the conception was simply a matter of luck.

A majority of the time when there are infertility problems in a relationship, the problem lies with the woman. But a large amount of times it lies with the man as well.

Acupuncture and Fertility Results

There have also been instances where infertility problems in men have attempted to be resolved via acupuncture.  With men, however, there have as of yet been few reports of acupuncture helping with their fertility problems. There also have been relatively few studies that have actually put to the test whether acupuncture has an effect on male fertility. Until these studies occur, the effect of acupuncture on male infertility will remain undetermined.

When the infertility problem lies with the man, sometimes drugs are employed. One of the primary types of drugs used are drugs that contain gonadotropins. Gonadotropins are natural hormones in both men and women. In women it affects the development of the ovaries. In men, it causes gonadal growth. However, a hormone imbalance can cause low sperm counts. If the man has an imbalance in this hormone, doctors sometimes prescribe a drug with this hormone in the hope of correcting the imbalance. Once the balance is restored, the doctor will then monitor the sperm count to determine if it has increased. If so, the infertility may be resolved. If not, the doctor will work with the man to find other solutions.
