In order to remember the strengths of the suits in a bridge card game a good tip is to apply the alphabet sequence C, D, H and S, meaning, of course, the four suits Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades. This is the order from lowest to highest with Clubs being the lowest value suit and so on. Hearts and Spades are referred to as the major suits and are deemed to be stronger than the Clubs and Diamonds. If you elect to play a bridge hand with a major suit (Hearts or Spades) as the trump suit you will not need to score as many tricks as a minor suit contract (Clubs or Diamonds) to achieve a similar score.
In No-Trumps the play is conducted with all the suits being considered equal in value / strength. No-Trumps comes about usually when you have a balanced hand where no outstanding suit is obvious and the best way forward towards a game score is to play without trumps being called or bid. It is more difficult to play and defend bridge hands in no-trump contracts because you must keep control of all four suits rather than a single trump holding. Scoring nine tricks, of the thirteen available, in no-trumps will yield the same game score as a game contract in one of the minor suits (where you must score eleven tricks).
Bids are always upwards so bids at a numerically higher level outbid lower numeric bids. This means that a bid of 2 Clubs will outrank a bid of 1 Diamond despite the Diamond suit being the higher ranking suit. The game values are 3 No-Trumps, 4 Hearts or 4 Spades and 5 Clubs or 5 Diamonds. Higher bids at the 6 level are called Small Slams. A Small Slam occurs when 12 of the 13 available tricks are bid and made. All 13 tricks scored constitute a Grand Slam.
