Also called a mini-split system, ductless air conditioning is an air conditioning solution in which ducts are not required. Ductless air conditioners are made of up basically two units, an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. The outdoor unit houses the compressor and condenser, and is connected via a refrigerant line to the indoor unit that has the evaporator, blower, and thermostat. Usually, maximum hole of three inches is required for the refrigerant line, making it an easy and quick installation process.
Besides the main difference of using two units instead of one, ductless air conditioning still works in the same way as a central air outdoor unit. The indoor and outdoor units work together to remove heat from indoors and transfer it outdoors. The air handling, blowing, and thermostat controls are all done inside, and the loud compressor unit and water condensate all happens outside. The refrigerant line transfers the heat as it moves between the two units, and similar to a refrigerator, releases the heat in an area that is already presumably warmer.
The advantages to ductless air conditioners are many. They have a good number of features and in general are a much better choice than portable and window units that people will often default to without exploring the ductless solution. Because of the lack of ducting, they are usually quite simple and easy to install, especially in an older house that may never have been able to install central air. You don’t have to cut any large holes in the walls because the refrigerant lines are very small. Most window units present other problems like reduced window space, security issues, and moving around depending on seasons. None of these are present in a ductless air conditioning system. Both portable units and window units are space hogs, take up a lot of space on the wall or the floor. The indoor ductless unit is not too big, and it can also be installed much higher on the wall to leave plenty of space for other things. Ductless units are quieter due to the compressor outside and are also usually more efficient. Their thermostat is also a great touch and make it easier to regular temperature than with a window or portable unit.
