Simple Plumbing Advice from an Atlanta Plumber

It seems that most things these days are getting expensive; having a plumber attend your house to repair a problem with the pipes is no exception. For some things, such as if your central heating breaks, there is no choice but to call a professional company. However, there are many little plumbing problems around the house that you should be able to fix yourself with a little know-how.

One of these problems is a leaky faucet — it certainly is not classed as emergency issue (unless it’s an extremely leaky faucet flooding your bathroom), but it is certainly an irritating issues that needs to be resolved.

1. Firstly, very importantly turn off the water that is supplying the sink. Underneath the sink should be some form of tap that will enable you to shut off the water. If you cannot find one, then you may need to find the main water controller to your house and turn that off — after you have done this, open the faucet to ensure all the water has flowed out of the pipes.

2. Put the plug into the drain. If you loosen the screw and then lose it down the drain, it will take you time to replace.

3. There will be a screw that holds the handle in place. Use a screwdriver to take it off. If you cannot see the screw, it is probably hidden underneath a metal or plastic cap, so you will need to remove this first. Once the screw is out, you should be able to remove the handle by prying it off with a flat screwdriver.

4. Prior to completing this process, you should purchase a new washer to fit around the faucet. Take off the old washer and replace it with the new one.

5. After this it is just a matter of replacing the faucet handle, screwing it back in (and ensuring it’s tight) and then replacing the cap.

That is all there is to it; it is a very simple plumbing task, and by completing this process yourself instead of calling a professional, you will save yourself quite a few dollars.
