Dogs have huge amounts of energy and most of them need several walks per day to help them run it off and stop them from getting bored. If you have to spend time away from home each day to go to work then you run a real risk of your dog going stir crazy and starting to destroy the furniture or to bark at everyone who walks past the house.
Even leaving him outside tied to his dog kennel could be a risk as, though he is getting fresh air and has more space than if he was left in the kitchen, he could potentially get tangled up in the lead and do himself some damage.
One answer to this is to buy him an exercise pen for dogs. These pens are great for allowing your pet to play with his toys and run around without risking damage to the furniture indoors or your plants outdoors. It will also prevent a falling out with the neighbours by him escaping into their garden to dig holes!
There are three main types of dog exercise pen: modular, chain link and wooden framed. Some of these can be self built while others come ready made for you. Don’t be put off by the idea of constructing one yourself as it is really quite a simple procedure and you can buy kits with everything needed contained in them.
Some people start to get their dogs used to being in a pen right from the beginning by having a puppy exercise pen in the house. This prevents the puppy from causing chaos while he is still being trained in socially acceptable behaviour! It is also a great aid to house training.
Just remember that though dog exercise pens have their place, there is no substitute for a good long walk with you.
