If you’re looking into mobile printers, sometimes the best place to start is with an older model. They often offer a lot of features that are comparable to today’s machine, while the price is a steep discount. Of course, for top quality, you’re going to want to stick with trusted names, such as Hewlett Packard, Canon, Brother, and Epson. There is one particular model I’d like to briefly review in this article. It has a lot to offer. That said, there are also two negatives. Whether you will want to sacrifice those two aspects of the machine for the plethora of positives is up to you. To find out more, please read on.
The HP 450Ci Mobile DeskJet Printer began selling in May of 2005. This is the primary reason for its first negative, which is speed. It can only print up to 9 pages per minute black and 8 pages per minute color. This isn’t terrible for a portable printer, but you can find much better. Since we’re on the topic of negatives, let’s get them out of the way before getting to the good stuff. The other negative is paper jams. While paper jams are easy to fix, they can be a nuisance and cut into your work time. Now, let’s get to the positives.
The HP 450Ci Mobile DeskJet Printer has a list price of $353, but you find an enormous discount on Amazon, where new units are currently selling for as low as $119.99. Used units are also selling for $58.76. Presently, there are only four new units and three used units left.
The quality for the 450Ci is strong for a mobile printer. Print resolution can reach as high as 1200 x 1200 dots per inch black and 4800 x 1200 dpi color (optimized). The latter can only be reached if you use premium photo paper. Another great aspect about this model is that even with the optional battery, its weight tops out at only 4.5 lbs. A foldable sheet feeder assists tremendously with storage and travel. And there are many interface options, which include USB, parallel, infrared, CompactFlash, and Bluetooth.
In my opinion, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives, especially for the price. You won’t find many mobile printers offering so much for so little.
