White Gold Rings Are Affordable Glamour

White gold rings are comparative to sterling silver and platinum rings. Silver will tarnish so it is often paired with an alloy to make sterling silver. Platinum is much harder and will not tarnish but is much more expensive than either gold or silver. White gold is an alloy that does not tarnish, looks very much like platinum, and is very affordable.

Yellow gold and a white metal mixed together create white gold. Its properties will depend on the metals used and in what proportion. Gold and nickel is a hard and strong alloy that is excellent for rings. Gold mixed with palladium makes an alloy that is soft and good for gemstone settings. Gold can be mixed with various metals for added weight and strength, but often this requires skilled goldsmiths. White gold is a phrase used as a general term by the jewelry industry for all jewelry that has a whitish hue and is some sort of gold alloy that has a karat weight.

White gold rings are really a light grey. To make them brilliant white they are plated with rhodium. Rarely is white gold not plated so many people think that the rhodium plating is the real color of white gold. The rhodium plating will wear away over time. Therefore, it should be replaced every year or so to keep it looking new. Most local jewelers can do this for a reasonable price.

White gold karat weight is the same as yellow gold karat weight. It comes in 18kt, 14kt, or 9kt. Gold that is 18kt is 75% gold and 25% other metals. The same proportions of gold and alloy are used but white gold is made from only white metals like silver or nickel.

Since white gold can be made using any white metal, try to find out what alloy the ring uses before buying it. Some people have allergic reactions if too much nickel is in contact with their skin. White gold is usually with something other than nickel because of this. White gold and nickel alloys can still be found in antique jewelry and some current pieces will have nickel in them. Some jewelry places might not know what alloys their jewelry contains. Try to find out if possible.

Good quality jewelry costs a lot and will be around a long time. It is an investment and should be researched before purchasing. Quality white gold rings can be found in many local jewelry stores and department stores. There are also online merchants that sell them. Auctions and pawnshops are other good places to find white gold rings. Be sure to ask for a receipt and a warranty. If the ring is appraised as anything other than quality white gold, take it back.
