Converting LPs to Digital Format

If you have a large LP collection and you want to listen to it on and MP3 player or other digital players, the first thing you will have to do is to convert your LP records into digital format.  Why not just buy the songs off of the Internet or even in CD format from your local record store?  You certainly can IF IT IS AVAILABLE.  A lot of the more popular songs and albums have already been converted into digital format, but if you happen to enjoy the music from your albums that are of the more obscure variety, then the likelihood that they have been reproduced in digital format is not as good.

Even if our songs or albums are available in digital format, the question now becomes ‘what is the quality of the recording?’  Even if you purchase a commercially available CD version of an album that you already own, the sound quality on the CD is significantly less than that of the LP.  The reason for this is that the LP produces a continuous sounds wave whereas the digital music necessarily has to break up the wave into SAMPLES which are time slices of the wave.  A typical CD has 44,100 samples per second (referred to as 44.1 kHz) and a 16-bit sample depth which means that 16-bits of data are used to store each of the samples.  The bottom line is that the sound is being compromised by converting it to digital format.  An untrained ear might not be able to distinguish some of the subtleties but they do exist.

Regardless of you reasons for wanting to convert records to CDs, it is highly recommended to use the highest sample rate and the highest bit depth that your system will support.  You can always make a copy of the resulting file and compress it for use on a specific player if necessary, but at least you will have a digital replica in the purest form that your system is capable of producing.  The most critical components in this project will be your record player which reproduces the sound off of the record, and your sound card which captures the sound siganl and converts it to digital format.
