Travelling Without A Laptop Computer

A lot of backpackers and travellers these days seem to take computers with them. It makes a lot of sense. A really small netbook or laptop will slip into just about any bag without taking up too much space. You can then work and e-mail more or less to your heart’s content wherever you may find yourself. Most youth hostels and other sorts of backpacking accommodation seem to offer free Wifi networks so you can get online and it saves on the hassle of having to go out and look for an internet café or waiting in line for your turn on a computer.

The downside is that you are carrying extra weight with you all the time. The bigger issue is that you are carrying something that is both quite valuable and quite small. This makes it an attractive target for thieves so you end up worrying about whether it will get stolen. So for this reason I often choose to go backpacking without my laptop. That way I can drop my backpack in the hostel and just head out with only my wallet, passport and a small camera to worry about. But there are a couple of things that I do take along to make life easier. The first is a USB Flash Drive, which lets me download and save all my documents. This is useful because if I want to send a couple of emails or write some notes for myself then I just pop my flash drive into the computer and always keep a record of what I’ve done. I think that one of the best flash drives on the market is the SanDisk Cruzer because it comes loaded with useful software and is reliable. Another nice option is the Lacie Key Flash Drive which is really small and rugged. With such small devices in my pocket I find it much easier to pack and go than to take a laptop on holiday.
