If you are a long time camper or outdoorsman you probably know a few secrets to ensuring your first time camping buddies have a great time but if you are a parent who is taking your kids camping you may be unsure on how to make the experience enjoyable without sacrificing safety. One easy and fun idea is to bring your kids walkie talkies along so that you don’t have to keep scolding them for heading off into the woods alone.
If you are like any parent you probably have a random set of walkie talkies lying around the house that your kids have played with at some time in their lives. If not you need not worry, you can usually pick up a cheap set for less than $30 bucks or a better set for less than a hundred.
The whole point however is to give your children the freedom to wander around a bit for themselves so they don’t feel like they’re tied to you at the hip. Usually kids as they start to get older want to head off on their own. Obviously you wouldn’t want them to do so without protection but they probably won’t have as good of a time in the woods if you’re holding their hands all the time.
If however you give them a walkie talkie and a matching walkie talkie headset and tell them they can run around the camp so long as they stay within range of the walkie talkies then they will likely have a much better time out in the woods and will have better memories and experiences as well.
Of course all this assumes that your kids are capable of identifying the risks around them and that the wilderness can sometimes present but you as a parent should be better able to judge your child’s ability to take care of himself. The walkie talkie ends up acting like a leash where you can keep in touch with one another and always know that you are within a predetermined distance from each other, like an invisible leash.
